About Hostas, a Popular Perennial Worldwide
According to Mark Zilis, author of The Hostapedia, hostas are the most popular perennial in the United States. Their popularity extends worldwide: Since the origin of the genus during the eighth century in East Asia, hostas have gained admirers in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. At last count, over ten thousand cultivars had been produced, and hybridizers around the world continue to introduce more.
